Residential Boiler Installation
A home boiler is essentially a water heater that uses natural gas or electricity to heat water that’s transported around the home. A boiler provides radiant heat to warm objects unlike a forced air system that heats the air in the room. A boiler can make you feel warmer with a lower air temperature and provide more balanced heat in your home during the winter. Ready to install a new boiler in your Connecticut home? Edgerton, Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning offers reliable residential boiler installation to keep you warm in the chilly months with help choosing the right boiler for your home.
How to Choose a New Boiler
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a new boiler is its efficiency rating. All boilers are rated based on their annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) which tells you how well the boiler can convert energy in the fuel to heat your home over an entire year. A 90% AFUE rating means the boiler turns 90% of the energy in the fuel into heat for your home with 10% waste. Old gas boilers may have a rating of just 56% to 70% AFUE while mid-efficiency new systems can be rated at 80-83%. If you choose a high-efficiency boiler, you can get 90% to 98.5% AFUE for the ultimate energy savings.
We recommend choosing the highest AFUE rating within your budget. With a boiler with a 65% AFUE rating, your energy cost for the year may be $1,300. By installing a high-efficiency boiler with a 90% AFUE rating, your savings would be around $360 per year.
You should also compare boiler features to choose the right model. Boilers can be condensing or non-condensing. Condensing boilers concentrate water vapor and uses waste heat to pre-heat cold water that enters the system for greater energy efficiency.
You will also need to choose the type of fuel the boiler uses. In Connecticut, gas boilers are most common and they are cheaper to install and operate than oil or electric boilers. An electric boiler can be used if your home doesn’t have natural gas. While electric models are virtually 100% efficient, they are more expensive to use.

Many people who have never lived in a home with radiators and a boiler may think the system is outdated and consider replacing it with a heat pump or furnace. Still, boiler systems are considered the most comfortable because they heat the home evenly, quietly, and continually without blowing heated, dry air. If your home is equipped for a boiler system, there’s no reason to replace it with a different heating method. Today’s boilers can last 15 years or longer and some can even serve as a heating system and water heater for the ultimate efficiency.
